Free technical articles

One topic, three versions, one audience at a time.

Every question in timber construction affects three kinds of readers differently: the engineer wants the standard and the calculation, the architect wants the design choice and the specification, the contractor wants a quick decision table for the site. I therefore write every issue three times.

Series

Each article contains three audience versions: ⚙ engineer (~5 pages of normative analysis), 🏛 architect (~2 pages of design and specification), 🛠 contractor (~1 page checklist for the site). On the article page you choose your version.

Moment-resisting timber connections

A timber column that transfers a moment to a cantilevering beam via a steel plate and bolts looks simple, but structurally belongs to the more complex connection types. No version of Eurocode 5 contains a calculation method for it. This article discusses the nef concept, the widely used Porteous & Kermani method, the risk of brittle failure due to tensile stress perpendicular to the grain, and what this means for design and execution.
